Christmas gifts 150x150 How to Have a Pocket Friendly Christmas1 Make a list: Write down every person you want to buy a gift for, this year. Include family members, friends and work colleagues. If you are planning to visit some parties during the week, remember to put the names of the hosts and for special events such as Secret Santa’s.

Assign the amount: Next to each name on the list, assign a maximum amount you wish to spend on each one of them. Take into account what they usually buy you and maybe don’t exceed the amount or go too below it. Whatever you do, don’t go over the budget or you will end up spending too much.

List of things: Make a list of extra things you need to buy for this season. This includes greetings cards, postage costs, gift-wrapping supplies like paper, cellotape and bows, holiday decorations etc. Include a little bit extra into your budget in case something comes up last minute. If you can’t bear to cut down on gift quantity, consider buying practical gifts that you would have bought anyway. And try to skip electronics as they are expensive and becomes dated quickly.

Add up: Add up the total cost of everything and see if you have enough money to cover it all. If not, then make a few cut backs and use old leftover cards and make your own for example. Don’t use the saved money on anything else other than planned.

Home made goodies: Whether you like to bake cookies, knit socks, or brew beer, share your hobby as a holiday gift for neighbours, family and friends. It will be pocket friendly and will be appreciated as a gesture from the heart.
