Wireless inventors given top honour

The Australian team behind the technology wireless LAN was recognized was their work, on the same date that the organization’s annual report reveals the magnitude of the invention’s worth.

Headed by electrical engineer Dr John O’Sullivan, the researchers were awarded the CSIRO chairman’s Medal at a ceremony in Melbourne.

Wireless LAN, also known as WiFi or IEEE 802.11, forms the backbone of wireless networks around the world, and is used in an estimated 800 million devices including computers, printers and mobile phones. Read more…

X-Ray machine beats the Apollo 10 space capsule and Stephenson’s rocket

  • Out of nearly 50,000 votes cast, one in five people named X-rays for having made the greatest impact on the past, present and future.
  • Ten of the most significant objects in science, engineering, technology and medicine were selected for the poll, which was conducted as part of the Science Museum’s events to mark its centenary.
  • The first three positions were filled by medical inventions or discoveries, the X-ray machine being followed by the discoveries of penicillin and the DNA double helix structure. Read more…

Dolphin speak relies on brevity

Nerve Cells trigger out itch: Study

Researches have found specific nerve cells responsible for itchiness, a discovery that could lead to better treatments for skin conditions.

Experiments on mice show they have nerve cells that convey only an itch sensation – contradicting common wisdom that itch and pain are closely related.
