Benefits of a good night’s sleep

Good Sleep is not only a blessing for your health; it is also a good indicator of the state of your health. Sleep is therapeutic and healing, and impacts your body in various ways.

While you sleep, you brain sorts out the day’s events, learning and information and stacks it all away in such a way that you can retrieve the memories when you need them. So, if you don’t sleep properly, you are likely to have trouble with both your short-term and long-term memory. This is bad news for students – indeed, for anyone who has learned any new skill during the day. This is why sleep hygiene is such an important part of the training schedules of world-class athletes.
Your body also repairs itself while you sleep. The healing of wounds and bone and muscle injuries takes longer than usual when the quality of your sleep is poor.
Also, if you are sleep deprived, chances that you will have an accident of some sort are higher than usual. You see this typically on highways, factories and construction sites. That’s because sleep deprivation affects your ability to stay alert.
Several metabolic diseases such as polycystic ovary, diabetes and hormonal disorders are linked to a lack of quality sleep. This is because hormones fluctuate throughout the waking-sleep cycle and are affected when the sleep quality is bad. This in turn, may affect insulin and cortisol secretion, which ultimately affects the ability of the body to balance its hormones.

Quality of sleep could be affected by:

Taking your worries and indecisions to bed on a regular basis
The consumption of tea or coffee close to bed time
Too much alcohol
Viewing disturbing visuals at night
Reading disturbing information at night
Having an unkempt, unhygienic place to sleep, or sleeping in your work clothes
Having a blaring television or radio on in the room
Having an erratic bed time
Eating a very heavy meal at night
The side effects of any medication you are on

There are two types of unhealthy sleep. The first type is when the normal sleep cycle is affected – you may not be getting enough time in the deep part of the sleep cycle, so all you have is a very light sleep. The second type is when your sleep is actually interrupted.

Manage your Anger

Utilize the energy in a positive way. Exercise is the best. Moderate daily exercise helps keep the mind fit and expends the extra energy positively.
Do ten minutes of breathing exercises daily. You could even do this while driving or at work. Inhale and exhale deeply. This has been scientifically proven to calm the nervous system down.
Count to a hundred. Experts say that people often forget to count in a fit to rage, and that’s why it doesn’t work. They should practice doing this.
Try Jacobson’s technique: When you feel a wave of anxiety or anger, scan your body immediately and try and locate a tense muscle. Then relax it. Locate another tense muscle. Relax that too. As your muscles relax, your heart rate and breathing both slow down and you begin to feel calmer.
Write your problems on a piece of paper. Feel free to abuse the person or situation that caused you this anger. Then burn the sheet or tear it up. Ideally, do this every night before bed. It apparently works wonders.
Try the empty chair technique. Visualize the person you are angry with sitting on a chair opposite to you. Shout or say what you want to the person. It’s an immediate release.
Keep a though dairy. Every night, pen down the number of times you got angry and showed it, the length of time you stayed angry, what you said and what was the trigger. This helps you understand you anger cycle. Self-realization is the first step to correcting an anger problem.
Coach yourself to express anger the correct way. For instance, if you are angry with your boss, write her/him a mail explaining all your points, rather than suppressing your anger.
Try and see humor in situations and avoid reacting immediately.
Share your anger with a person you are close to. That way, you will dispense with it.
A lot of anger is about expectations. Try and lower them.
Practice restraint. Before you say something to anyone, write it down on a piece of paper. Look at it again in the morning. This will give you time to calm down and think. Often, you will realize that the issue doesn’t bother you anymore.

Screen resolution is 800 x 400 pixels, higher than the iPhone’s400×320 pixels.

Nexus has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, FM radio and active noise cancellation.

Cost & Availability

It costs $529 (Rs24,330), less than the iPhone’s Rs 30,000. The Nexus One is not yet available in India. It is selling in the US, UK, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Marking the imminent end of the winter season, Lohri is a Hindu religious festival and a huge cultural event in many parts of northern India and particularly in Punjab. The date of the festival is determined by the solar calendar and Lohri marks the coldest day of the year. The event is inextricably linked to the land and the harvesting seasons with the festival being seen as the last chance for rest and merriment before the crop harvesting begins later in the year in March or April. As the sun sets on the evening of Lohri, huge bonfires are lit across the state symbolising the sun and the move away from winter towards the warmth of the summer months. Whole communities often gather for religious services and to share meals and snacks cooked on the open fires.
