Suranjoy creates history for India

June 14th, 2009  |  Published in Sports

A long wait comes to an end; it took 15 long years and a diminutive pugilist from Manipur to break the jinx at the continent’s premier event – Asian Boxing Championship. Suranjoy Singh was the only Indian, who stepped out of the ring with gold in Zhuhai on Saturday. Suranjoy defeated China’s Li Chao 9-8 in the flyweight (51kg) category to become the seventh Indian to win gold at the Asian Championship and in the process joined C.Narayanan(1971), Mehtab Singh (1971,73), Badri Singh (1980), Kaur Singh (1980,82) and Jas Lal Pradhan (1982).

Raj Kumar Sangwan was the last pugilist to corner gold in Tehran in 1994.

The other finalist – Nanao Singh and Jai Bhagwan – failed to get past their opponents and had to be satisfied with silver.
