How to Clean Mushrooms

February 12th, 2011  |  Published in TIPS

1 Get Started: Briefly rinse mushrooms in water and lay them out on a towel for a few hours so the mushrooms have time to release the water.

2 Through Wash: Never soak fresh mushrooms or leave them sitting in water. Instead, try cleaning them by using a mushroom brush with soft bristles. You could try a vegetable scrubber too, but use lightly as bristles are stiff.

3 Without Soaking: Another method is to wipe the mushrooms using a clean, damp towel. Don’t forget to wipe the stems, too, if you will be using them.

4 Tone down the taste: You can also simply soak them in a little salted water and rinse off after about 20 minutes. To tone down the taste, add a little vinegar to the salted water.

5 Store well: Store fresh mushrooms in a closed paper rather than plastic, or in an open container. Helps them to breathe better and won’t get wrinkly and dries up as fast. Keep refrigerated.
