Save the coat: Most metal objects come with a protective coating these days, so all you need to do is clean with a damp cloth and wipe dry. Use wax polish for additional protection. Do not scrub or use any detergent or cleaning agent as that might remove the protective covering on the surface.
For Stubborn stains: If there is too much grime, use a mild detergent or cleaning agent. Clean again with a damp cloth and wipe dry completely. Do not leave any trace of detergent on the surface. Do not use scrubbers or sharp objects to clean.
For Rust: Use diesel, vinegar or lemon to get rid rust. Apply wax polish or paint for protection.
For White Metal: For silver or steel objects, use silvo. Rub gently with a soft cloth and polish with a dry cloth.
Natural look: Sometimes natural tarnishes also look good, giving an antique feel to the piece. If you like the look, leave it and enjoy the natural ageing process.
